YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT AND YOUR PRODUCTIVITY

According to observations by scholars the workplace environment contributes directly to productivity with an average 24% contribution to job satisfaction, an increase by 5% in productivity and overall team productivity by 11%. Some of the factors that pertain the working environment are room temperature, air conditioning and circulation, light, noise conditions etc. So what are some of the elements and some of the ways how to ensure a conducive for environment?

Greenery and overall optics: The mind is affected by what the eye perceives and psychologists have determined that having plants in an office has an overall calming effect on employees, thus reducing stress and anxiety which can be heightened by the day to day work pressure. A good looking space in general also give employees moral boost and helps in making them look forward to getting to work. Who doesn't like a beautiful space?

Sounds: It is a no brainer that noise and loud activity is distracting hence bad for productivity. It is important to ensure that workspaces except those where noise and movement are expected eg a music or arts studio remain relatively quiet. Piped music and relaxing tunes can also be played to enhance the worker’s experience. Beyond providing background noise, music improves both productivity and cognitive performance, especially in adults. Listening to music can help people manage anxiety, become motivated and stay productive

Decluttering: A cluttered space could mean a cluttered brain. Lack of order in a workspace does not only cause distractions but may also lead to wasted time searching for work tools and documents. A well organised space enhances productivity via ease of operations while moving through the workspace and more effective interactions within said space for instance a positive impression to clients.

Natural Light: A workplace Wellness study by Future Workplace found that 38 percent of employees lose 60 minutes of time when their emotional wellness is suffering. The same study also proved that those who are not exposed to a good amount of natural light are more likely to see a drop in their mood, and potentially—as a consequence—their productivity. In addition to feeling good in a well lit space it contributes to eye health. Poorly lit spaces may lead to workers straining to see which in the long run may cause headaches and eye problems subsequently affecting productivity.

Open (and recreational) spaces: Change of scenery is important to keep blood flowing and ideas coming. Outside areas for breaks and indoor recreational facilities ward off boredom and have the employees enjoy the office space and spend more time there; increased (and positive) office hours can only be good for productivity.
